Tiny flowers are calmly scattered on the water after a momental flare of their lives.

Then inside the stalks starts the bearing.
After a while they are covered with the little grains, which gradually grow bigger and heavier.

The pretty white flowers of arrowhead contrast the olive green duckweed overlapping one another to carpet the water.

Little by little, not resisting gravity, the stalks bend.
The ears of rice browning and bowing make a beautiful supple arch ever so quietly.

Triplet Starting from calendar-January

Triplet Staring from Calendar-January

A new year. My renku spirit was awakened by a verse found in the reply from one of my friends I had sent my calendar to.

         hikarisasu              tenchinarikeri                   hatsugoyomi
the light is shining/ all over heaven and earth/ a new calendar

The picture for January has a scene of Sacra di San Michele (designated monument of Piemonte in north Italy) painted on it. My haiku friend from the old time had composed a haiku just right for this picture titled 'the creation'.

From this haiku and her comment "The little figure works as the viewpoint for the people looking at this picture" a  dual composition emerges: the figure against heaven and earth and the  person looking at it against the calendar.

Last year while I was standing at this holy site, the sacred air veiling the entire site led me
to feel everything, from buildings, people, mountains, rivers to the soil, had been created; thus, the tile was fixed on 'the creation'. I was deeply moved to find this picture had led her to perceive the scene 3-dimensionally  and express it as 'heaven and earth where the light is shining.'

Feeling like returning the ball which had been thrown back to me,I hit upon the idea of monthly renku. I wanted to write bilingually and also it's a long while since my last practice so I decided to challenge the shortest,'mitsumono' (linking the first three verses),though it is my first trial.

We managed to finish it with the second verse on a new year card and the third on blossom storm,by referring to the rules ever so often. January version of the linking was completed with the English translation attached.

Ms. Yoshiko Kotagiri, a resident of Ina,sent me verses at once with lovely imagination without any prior experience in renku (or maybe because of it). I would like to continue this little project with alternate starting verses and keep renewing this blog from February on, hoping to see some improvement by Dec.

"Shaken"-Collection of Haiku Pulled Out of a Warehouse / 「

EXPRESSION THROUGH HAIKU /

Each time I was stricken with the beauty or the awesome power of the natural phenomena, I searched for a way of expressing my sentiments and finally came to find HAIKU.

My daily walks or strolls overseas became great fun and meaningful. My senses responding to the seasons were sharpened. I grew more sensitive to both the regional and ubiquitous climates.

During the past decade or so my interest shifted to painting pictures but I have been concerned with my surrounding nature all the same.

Lately, I have started matching my paintings with my corresponding haiku and I realized that was what I had wanted to do before starting my art activities.

HAIKU SHEET MADE BY HAND /

I remembered my experiment in making a booklet by myself some years ago. I took some haiku out of my long-forgotten notebooks and made them into a haiku sheet, following some examples. Some of them had been published in the haiku journal 「耕」,"kō" and "HI". Here are some pages from my totally manual haiku sheet.

Manual bookbinding required painstaking work but creating the only booklet in the world was a worthwhile experience.

ONE WELL-PLACED  PAGE /

Now I would like to find a good balance and relationship between the letter and the picture
parts. Not exactly like HAIGA or haiku with its illustration, I want to find the perfect and comfortable harmony of haiku and paintings to make one piece of artwork. When haiku is composed bilingually, the three portions need a careful and subtle arrangement. This final process of creating a page is not only a joy but worthy of a toil.
