Triplet Starting from Calendar - The Ruins of

crumbled stone columns
silently in bloom
winter violet Ma
the footsteps resounding
Watch Night in Pompeii Yo
exhausting all
possible words with the young blood

In the starting verse, from among a tiny gap of the fallen pillars peeks out a violet. When it comes to a violet, a haiku by Sohseki Natsume
comes to my mind: I wish I were born/as small a person as/ a violet. The violet seems to symbolize a 'small person', coming out of his search for a selfless way of life.

On the other hand, a violet in this verse, in secret but standing upright, is blooming with its cute purple color added to the monotonous ruins and is vitalizing them.
The footsteps in the second verse echoing through quiet Pompeii on the new year's eve can evoke the springy steps hurrying to the parties, the wordless saunter of a couple or even a march by the soldiers in boots.
The third diverted to the scene of heated discussion with the young going on till the daybreak. I hope this will suggest a slight link back to the January picture with a verse in this project, depicting the young man looking down from a tower in the daylight.

。。 Triplet Starting from Calendar...November
Triplet Starting from Calendar /Chaos, Loneliness, and...November
an egg and a castle
asleep under a charm
Indian summer Tei
a winter butterfly
on the muzzle of fort's cannon Ma
celebration
the birds take their flights
at clicking shutters Mi
November triplet starts from the picture drawn during my stay in Italy of two years before.
An old castle built in the 12th century in the Santa Lucia Bay goes by the name of Egg Castle.
In legend it was put under a spell that the castle together with Naples would fall when the egg planted under it by the Normans broke.
The image of the unique bronze statue of a hen in the picture matches the charm and Indian summer of the starting verse.
The second verse-The peaceful scene where a butterfly rests at the tip of a fort's cannon is shifted by the shutters and flash in celebration, making the birds fly away at a time in the third.

Such contrasts as serenity vs movements and the remainder of fighting vs symbols of peace were described in this triplet.
Teina who I asked to offer the starting verse had joined our July triplet with her wonderful second verse.
She sent me several verse options all too good to eliminate, for she has been pursuing renku
practices alone, unlike me.
She seems to be nearly absorbed in renku activities such as study of haiku literature, heading the reading group of Bashoh in English, editing journals, and planning and leading renku gatherings in addition to composing renku itself.
Tense Day and Night in Naples
Santa Lucia, where I drew this picture, was a bright port town, overlooking Mt. Vesuvius, away from the din and bustle of Naples.
In the center of Naples, on the other hand, the traffic of cars is almost in the lawless state, which makes it difficult to cross big streets.
With the refugees hanging around, I was always tense day and night. I wasn't able to feel relaxed due to the chaos and dynamism there, which are unlikely to be seen in Japanese shopping quarters.
Reminded of Kolkata

It reminds me of the feeling I experienced while travelling in India 30 years ago: the thrilling sensation I felt in Kolkata(former Calcutta) each time I crossed big streets.
When I asked the way, 7,8 people gathered around me, each giving different directions; Upon getting out of the station, I was surrounded by the street children, thrusting their hands out for money, food, and so on.
In the big cities in India in those days everything coexisted and to get into it we had to be ready to cope with any situation
Neapolitan Nature
On the other hand, I might say it in fact comes
from the Neapolitan nature and the outsiders just take it as chaos.
Also even among Italians, the south is practically a foreign land to the northern Italians, so I hear my brother-in-law, who is from the north, hasn't been to the south yet.
After hearing all about my journey to the south, he said he might go there but the north Italians seem to feel much closer to other European countries.
Italy was united into one nation some 150 years ago but this kind of race feelings must be difficult to overcome. What's more, uniting
around 30 countries in EU can naturally cause various problems, which now can have an impact on the whole world.

A Momentary Sense of Sharing
In such an age as creaking here and there, it's particularly valuable to regain ourselves in nature, by which we are inspired to feel the joy of expressing something, as well as to communicate with strangers through haiku or renku.

Haiku gatherings or haiku journeys are the unique occasions to see the same object together and contest poems or talk about one another's work in person.
Meanwhile it is one of the advantages of the modern age to be able to simultaneously share the time on the web with people on the other side of the earth who are in different seasons.
In creation its lonely process toward completion is indispensable but at the same time the occasion for forgetting the loneliness even for a moment is something not to be missed.

Triplet Starting from Calendar-Fruit/ Oct.
in abundance of
the moon light
joyfully ripening Ma
persimmons pared by mom
and then dad hung them all Yo
with your each step,
the locusts fly off
all directions Ma
Accompanying the Oct. picture of the calendar(covered in this blog), the starting verse of this month doesn't tell what is ripening. In the second verse we know they are the persimmons; The verse is depicting a couple's role sharing for preparing dried persimmons but not the scenery of persimmons lit under the moonlight.
In the third verse the couple's child goes outside to find the rice paddies spreading widely, where each step of the child gets locusts to fly away.
Hopefully one autumn scene of a peaceful countryside can be appreciated.
It seems that the families with tall persimmon trees in their gardens feel like boasting of the sweetness of their own fruit. I hear the persimmons used to be precious sugary provisions when they were scarce in the past. Even in this affluent age it looks like the freshly picked persimmons from the gardens are appealing.

Spitting the pits out in the living room, my mother used to get angry at the rumor of our neighbor. "Mrs. T did it again...!".
Then another time she looked happy, saying,"They gave me Fukaya leeks*in return!!"
Also she often complained about my father; "He never eats the figs unless I pare them cleanly." etc.etc....: some of the peaceful scenes of a homely living room of the 60's.

Renku at a Hen Party

Growing up within the fence, for my father ran his own business, surely provided me with a peaceful and carefree childhood. Somewhere in my mind, though, I remember harboring my yearnings for the outside world. Particularly my desire to go overseas making use of a foreign language skill was quietly swelling.

Renku at a Hen Party
Talking of a past memory, I found a record of the triplet linking a group of my friends tried in our gathering at my friend's house as long as 14 years ago. Nobody but I knew the ABC's of renku but we somehow managed to complete two sets. I had experienced some renku but not enough as a sabaki leader; We all entertained ourselves with some efforts in the side show of the potluck-chattering party of my schoolmates.

Supple as well as Strong
Sept. is a month of prevention against disaster. I remembered the houses built of the paper pipes had been used for the tentative housing in the disaster-hit areas. It was delightful news that the environment-friendly material like paper was made strong enough to be used this way.

The supple paper has the strength to hold up the houses at the same time, which used to be the merit of Yamato Nadeshiko (Japanese women) as well. It's one of the Japanese virtues that have been lost.(I too

Dear Nora’s(Stray Cat)Easy Life in
Retirement
Once a stray cat,Kikko came to be our cat. Whether it is because she is a ’cute cat’ or takes to anybody, she is even loved by the passersby. She lies curled up in the cushion placed on the garden shelf all day, enjoying her easy life in retirement. She doesn’t forget to serve her neighbor fans by wagging her tail when they call out ”Hey, Kikko-cha~n!".
Inside the room, however, she always gazes at the garden with her back to us. Her back view looks like that of a philosopher. I keenly feel that nothing but fate decides where a stray cat can find its sanctuary.

Walking around the field with the fragrant purplish red flowers in cluster, we casually take notice of their petals scattered on the ground. This verse may have been created by identifying such quiet seasonal transition with his own life. This is a fine verse very suggestive of the scenery.

The spirit to look at the invisible things as described in a passage of "Essays in Idleness" seems to be resonant with the state of mind expressed with the starting verse 'mind relieved...'. The second verse, as a greeting to this passage, depicts not the splendid full moon but the moon light in the heart.
This serene world is shifted to the sonorous one of the echoing evening cicadas, which gave a finishing touch to this Aug.triplet.

Morning Glories, I Slurp
sohmen(fine noodle)...
Like the pecking sparrows in the July picture of the triplet project of this blog, we humans slurp down Japanese vermicelli(fine noodle); First we pick some shiso leaves(fragrant herb used as condiments), grind ginger and then season the cucumbers picked the morning in salt water...These will surely be some of our tastes of Japanese summer to be dearly missed if we ever live abroad.
A morning glory is another pleasure of the summer. This photo was taken by one of my friends, K. She is an experienced photographer, who has been taking flower pictures, entering them in the contests and holding private exhibitions. Moreover, she easily paints wonderful pictures, crafts cloisonne, and takes singing lessons, etc. There seem to be no bounds to her interests. She is one of my precious friends I can chat with about our mutual interests.
In this photo what a strong presence the drops of water have! The beauty of the morning glories brightened with each drop startles me.
One Single Morning Glory
Only one flower of the morning glory, when arranged in the alcove, tenses up not only the alcove but also the whole room.
I can't for anything help remembering Sen no Rikyuh (a
teamaster)who arranged a single morning glory in the alcove out of all he had plucked in the garden when he invited Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Regent, for tea.
I have painted a picture like this, imaging the shadow of Rikyuh who exercised his hospitality in the spirit of Wabi (taste for the simple and quiet). With "Once-in-a-Lifetime Occasion( to extend hospitality)"* as written on the scroll hung in the alcove in mind, I wish at present to be able to paint such a picture as to suggest drops of water on a morning glory and a flow of aroma from the incense.

TRANSFORMATION - PART 2 /
The bottom of the kimono is flapped by the wind with the red lining peeping out a little; This lining of kimono can be a symbol of erotic scenes. However, I couldn't help wearing the haori (Japanese half coat) inside out when I found the design in its lining deserved more than peeping out just a bit.

INSIDE-OUT LOOK of HAOR I / 羽織裏返しルック
1. First haori was turned inside out and the sleeves were sewn together after their bags were cut off.

2. Its body was cut short to the hip length and both the front bodies were sewn one on top of another so as to make a v-shaped collar.
3. After wearing it like this for a while, I started to feel the sleeves needed more length. So I used the cut-off body to be attached to the end of the sleeves to make them full length.
4. The coat's braid was sewn to the back at the waist as an ornament to finish it off.
