March 弥生-ya yo i

The third month of the lunar calendar is 弥生-yayoi. Originally it was いやおひ-iyaoi, meaning "plants growing further " and came to be called やよい-yayoi.

As it is April in the present solar calendar, it has additional names like 花見月-hanamizuki, the flower viewing month, 夢見月-yumemizuki,the dreaming month, or 春惜しみ月-haruoshimizuki, the month to reluctantly depart from spring and so on.

These different names evoke the classical poetic sentiments from the mid to the end of spring.

March 3rd is 雛祭り-hinamatsuri, the (Doll's) Festival for the girls.

The above photo shows a small pair of origami hina dolls made by a friend of mine, which I display in our entrance. She and I enjoy correspondence by both mail and e-mail. The set of her letter paper and envelope shown beneath and beside the dolls is also full of the classical sentiments.

Stressing too much femininity, I suppose, may go against the present trend but the cute dolls or the image of elegant kimono-clad ladies are the essential part of the art and our everyday life.
