OCTOBER(from my'22 photo-haiku calendar)

seeds handed /   over the fence with/    autumn shadow

OCTOBER (from my photo-haiku calendar '22)

The dahlia midnight moon has very cute flowers and attractive leaves. The copper or reddish-brown color of the leaves seems autumn itself.

In my walk the other day I exchanged a few words with a lady tending them in her flower garden. I couldn't resist praising  those flowers. She kindly gave me some seeds over the fence.

Unfortunately  the seeds were not of the dahlia but I was very happy with such a chance encounter and an unexpected gift.

Some of the remarks made by Masako a friend of mine after taking photos and haiku composed  in both Japanese and English on those photos by Masumi overlap; Some are far apart from each other,

which offered us the joy of collaborative work.

We would welcome your new words or haiku from different perspectives.

(Incidentally, a dayflower in the first photo is classified in autumn and the pansy in the second is in spring in the Japanese almanac. Also the
Japanese「 remarks」 are translated into "English". )

March 弥生-ya yo i

The third month of the lunar calendar is 弥生-yayoi. Originally it was いやおひ-iyaoi, meaning "plants growing further " and came to be called やよい-yayoi.

As it is April in the present solar calendar, it has additional names like 花見月-hanamizuki, the flower viewing month, 夢見月-yumemizuki,the dreaming month, or 春惜しみ月-haruoshimizuki, the month to reluctantly depart from spring and so on.

These different names evoke the classical poetic sentiments from the mid to the end of spring.

March 3rd is 雛祭り-hinamatsuri, the (Doll's) Festival for the girls.

The above photo shows a small pair of origami hina dolls made by a friend of mine, which I display in our entrance. She and I enjoy correspondence by both mail and e-mail. The set of her letter paper and envelope shown beneath and beside the dolls is also full of the classical sentiments.

Stressing too much femininity, I suppose, may go against the present trend but the cute dolls or the image of elegant kimono-clad ladies are the essential part of the art and our everyday life.

February 如月

The second month in the lunar calendar was如月,kisaragi, which falls on March in the present solar one. It is also written衣更着, meaning another layer of clothing (because of still chilly air)or 生更ぎ, meaning the rebirth of weeds and trees.

広辞苑,kohjien, Japanese dictionary prefers 生更ぎ to 衣更着 and personally, I am also drawn more to the rebirth as is shown in the next photo.

Another name for 如月 is 梅見月 umemizuki, plum-blossom-viewing month.
Thus, Feb. is the month to perceive spring in the springy light, loosening buds, twittering birds, and so on though the air is very cold.
This year, particularly, all of us have been eagerly waiting for the arrival of spring.
Feb.3rd is the start of spring, by the calendar this year.
