My Year 2017

The whole two years have passed since my blog was
started, which, I recollect, was ignited by this Japanese snake's beard.

Its blue fruit dropped inside our gate happened to catch my eye. "Where has it come from?" My search here and there has reached this plant.

Turning over the drooping thin leaves of the plain green bundle, I found their pretty blue fruit hidden in abundance.

They have regularly born berries, which either dropped or withered as they were without being noticed for decades.

"How terrible and wasteful ignorance is!" That's why I  started this blog. I guess my journey was started to seek the meaning of sharing my ideas or letting the seemingly valuable facts known to others.

Groping

My first year was spent on the time-consuming work of the technique.

Also starting to write passages and then to translate them made me realize how little my brain had functioned before.

The last process of matching photos or drawings to the passages was a fun.  Thus my solid first year swiftly passed.

Spontaneously

I have been spending the second year more spontaneously without any projects like that of renku of the first year.

The figures like how many bloggers over the world accessed my blog encouraged me the first year but
the second year I haven't been fully motivated, for I couldn't guess how they felt about it.

Therefore so far I have been entering my passage only when I got one and the second year is coming to an end now.

How About The Third Year?

While trying to maintain virtue of modesty like that of Japanese snake's beard, I would like to continue this blog at my own pace as a place of expression.

I hope to be sprightly uttering while keeping as calm and composed as the reserved and sober vase and the white double camellia in this photo.

The pears given by the powerful neighboring lady were superbly rich, sweet, and juicy. I wonder if I could mature like them.

Without so much fear and inner conflict behind arrogance and confidence of our youth, we may feel a little easier since we can settle and focus despite some functions inevitably falling with the age.

There are very poor future prospects in the world now but I will try at least to stick to the positive stance of piling up what I'm supposed to do every day with enough consideration for others.

A POND-SIDE CHAT

             ///////////////////////////////////
                                       ===============

”Ah, only one today!"
                                 ”Are they usually in pairs?"
”Always a pair of them around 2:00"
                                 ”Won't you take photos?"
”I just come watch them."
”Everyone has elaborate                                              cameras, don't they?"

Saying this, I hesitantly took out my compact digital camera and focused on the kingfisher with the camera I was embarrassed to take out among the pro-looking lenses.

"Look, it's partner has come!."
                                   "It did come at 2:00."
"Why don't they perch together?"

"Glad of just a shot of one."
"See you soon."
                                    "Probably at 2:00 again."

During this not a well-side but pond-side chat,  my ears were pleasantly tickled by the low twittering.

GINGKO LEAVES DANCING

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The big ginkgo trees in the precincts of the nearby shrine unhold a spectacular show of golden leaves every year. The other day I happened to go there on a windy day and witnessed a stormy fall of the leaves.

The leaves were actually showering down, covering half of the grounds together with orange pits. I heard the rhythmic sound of pits hitting the shrine roof, too.

This powerful transition of nature made me feel there is still a slight hope for the future. The world has gotten too interlocked everywhere to start from scratch. And yet as long as there is this regeneration of nature, we can afford to hope for just a little better tomorrow.

WINTER BUDS

Every winter I 'm moved by the winter buds shining in the sun.

They remind me of the strong gaze of the small refugees shown on TV.

I know their situations are much direr than those of the buds in Japan but the buds' strength in enduring the severe cold still touches my heart.

They seem to warn me not to indulge in an easy lifestyle.

Another typical winter scene is that of the thick bedquilts fluttering on the terraces of a condominium and it is the very picture of peace.

But just to think of the labor put into making the thick bedquilts or to compare ours with those used by the people in the slams or the refugee camps makes us recognize how blessed we are.
I hope we can at least adjust ourselves when we get concerned to know the situations of others in worse conditions. Then I suppose every trivial thing we see, hear, feel or touch in our routine bears some meaning.

蝉の海/ the Cicadas' Sea

upside down
having a swim in
the cicadas' sea

Looking at the trees upside down in forward upward circling on the bar,  I can feel quite refreshed, soaked in the cool shade of trees. The blue air from the forest veiled in  the azure sky beyond flows all over the body through my toes, cooling the tip of my head tired from the heat.

Yesterday enchanted by the transparent songs of the old bush warblers and sinking   in the chorus of cicadas today, I make it a daily practice to nourish my energy for no more than ten minutes.

Again in Retrospect

Again in Retrospect

Again in Retrospect/

Flashback

It was after all the strong impact of the melodies flowing all through the movie, "The Music of Strangers" that reminded me of the "Le Unse Les Autre", the movie I had seen long before, I suppose. The word "the Silk Road" should have first of all

brought back the memories of our Silk Road journey from 30 years
past, though.

The profound strains woven by the cello with weighty and stately sound and many Oriental instruments, or the low stable beat of the borelo and the steadfast steps to it seem to have resonated well.

Leafing through our travel album, I now set foot on the Silk Road in my dream, with my mind going over my past images.

Along the Silk Road foreigners were not allowed to walk around freely; Most people wore the national uniform; The roads got very dark in the evening without street lamps.  The experiences there and then  all have come to look dear and precious as time has gone by.

Meiyou!(No)

For instance in crossing that vast land by plane, and bus, we found it such a burden to purchase tickets.

To say nothing of the web or the smartphone, we had to sit in line in the big station square from early morning on and when we finally reached the ticket office, its window was slammed shut with one screach, "Meiyou! (No)".

Not knowing where to go and ask, we were often at our wits' end.  Writing Kanji (Chinese characters)helped us figure out how to obtain the tickets and we could somehow get them from time to time. I was able to enjoy the benefit of belonging to the same kanji circle.

From the city buildings up to the women's fashion, modernization has been conspicuous in China, while the problems are mounting like the air pollution.

Once in our journey we came down with a severe sore throat due to the thick clouds of dust hovering all over the roads.  The red internal medicine prescribed by the local doctor worked wonders as may be expected.

The air has been darkened with the air pollution from chemical and car wastes now instead of just the dust in those days. Such wisdom as creating a miraculous medicine wouldn't be able to cope with the present situation easily.

The epochmaking changes such as the Sky Train(Lhasa Express) connecting Beijing with Tibet may have been indispensable for the country's future but the humane dynamism of the people at the time of our journey can be the very cornerstone of its long national history.
Missing but...

Off the Silk Road into Tibet, where we stayed for a while, we traveled along the China-Nepal  Friendship Road toward Nepal.
There we met two Japanese who lost sight of their companion.

There being no way of communicating digitally then, the two had no choice but to wait for their friend who had all their belongings. He got seperated to pursue his lost passport. The two were endlessly spending time in the almost deserted village, asking
the travelers they came across for any information.

They could find their frined's whereabout at once in this modern
age but the way they accepted to wait in that situation  seems to suggesst what a journey is in its origin.

cheerfully

Now the  music flowing all through the movie  closely resembles the merry dance performance we saw at an inn in Turpan.
In the court of the inn with the sunlights pouring in through the grape vines we, the guests, were relaxed and entertained by the dance performance.

The troupe cheerfully performed their spectacular dance during a break from their work. They indeed made me recognize the music and rhythmic sense of the nation handed down through its history.

Pristine Voice

While web searching I found a Japanese name in the introduction of the cast. One of its ensuing sites showed a video of him playing the shakuhachi(Japanese flute) in a cave.

The cave paintings we saw in Bezeklik Cave(outskirts of Turpan)
had been almost faded and the cave itself had been nearly ruined.

On the other hand, this marvelous cave painting in the video was in Cave 285 in the Cave Temples of Dunhang and looked fully restored.

The incredibly dry, heartrending, blurred as well as sharp tones reverberated in the closed chamber.

It was the collaboration of shakuhachi, cave paintings and its space that made me feel as if I were listening to the pristine voice of the Japanese.

The actual paintings we saw over there were just wretched but one step outside spread the huge desert. It is tragic that the admirable faith drove people across  the desert to dig caves and to draw paintings in each chamber  while they were vandalized by another faith.

I was forced to see this lamentable reality which also holds true in our present age.

Boomerang

A movie flashed my mind back to our journey of 30 years before,
and then I imersed myself in the emotions I had experienced after watching another movie some further years back. Moreover my thought got to as far as the mural paintings from 15centuries ago.

When two wave patterns collide and break, some new waves are triggered around them. This seems to imply that every single incident emerges in corelation.

I once again acknowledged that it is important to squarely face
what occasionally happens and things we initiate doing each time with sincerity.
They will someday come back to us in some form or other...

////////////////////////

                                                            \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

I was very much moved by the film titled 'The Music of Strangers"

Elegiac and vibrant

Played by the talented musicians along the Silk Road, the melodies flowing through the film were elegiac as well as vibrant.

The tone has been woven with the sorrow of being driven away from their own homelands because of the racial disputes or the religious conflicts as a warp and with the deep rooted indigenous cheerfulness and rigor as a woof;  The unique tone kept echoing even after I left the cinema .

Particularly, the pleasant resonnace came from all the members' deep love of music and  their keen enthusiasum for trying to create melodious harmonies. I felt as if I were among their joyful jam session.

Spectacularly and powerfully

In the echo of the film loomed the final scene of "Les Uns et Les Autres (Bolero of Love and Sorrow)", where I could say my creative urge has originated.

The film was a kind of omnibus, following in turn four unrelated
families in Paris, New York, Moscow and Berlin; It culminates in the last scene of a charity dance event in Paris organized and participated in by the 3rd generation of the original four families.

Spectacularly and powerfuly on the central stage  goes on the bolero with George Don, choreographed himself, leading a circle of  dancers. A duet wishing for peace joins the dance and all the performance is watched by the UNICEF staff. Chance brought together the third generation of the four families, who had had no ties at the beginning of the film.

The emotions of those who had gone through the life-death experiences, love, farewell, disease and ageing, at the mercy of the War and destiny, were amplified to the recurring tunes of bolero and raise a tremendous uplift.

A Secret Wish

Printed on my mind, the scene made me realize humans still have some hope and a secret wish to get involved someday in such an event came forth then, while the rhythm still lingering on.

That feeling, which had been long lost without knowing when, was revived thanks to this film.

Sparrows' School ♩

Sparrows'  School ♬

A little school built in our garden has literally become ”a sparrows' school”.

Open-Air Concert

The sparrows seem to have nested in our school's attic, entering throuh a crevice of the eaves.  From time to time late in the quiet evening I hear the faint footsteps from the ceiling, 'tap,tap,tap...'.

The joy of encountering a tiny face peeping upside down out
of the eaves!  Then the parents frequent the nest to feed their young birds. Surounded by chirpings night and day, I feel as if
I were sitting in the open-air concerts.

I was even more touched by reading in a photo collection of sparrows that sparrows not only bring in food but also take out the chicks' droppings. Natural function beyond human intellect never ceases to amaze me.

Till Departure

Also  I can't but admire the spectacular nest making of swallows.

The nests are firmly made of all natural materials on the wall of the entrance to the community center, which has a heavy traffic of people every day.

The fledgelings' necks timidly stretch out of the nests and their faces with strangely big mouth parts make me smile.

The world they are soon going to leave their nests for is full of danger and yet abounds with freedom.  Until then, I can't help praying every moment, that the preperation for their departure will be safely made while their peace within the nest is maintained.

Baton or Whip?

By the way I remebered the song "Sparrows' School" for the first time in many years. After going over the lines once again on the web, I was surprised to find many explanations on them.

Some seemed to recognize the song made before WWII as the one to whip up war sentiment. They compared the relation of a teacher with a whip in his hand and his pupils following him in chorus to the militaristic education, while others thought just the teacher with his baton guided his clattering pupils
into one union.

Like haiku, the simpler the song is, the more varied its interpretation may well be. When another popular children's song "Killifish's School" was made after the War, it also seemed that one of its lines,
"🎼Who is a teacher and who are his pupils?
   They are enjoying all together.^^♪”
made the teacher in "Sparrows' School" look as if he were in military uniform whipping his pupils.

Food for Thought
Unexpectedly such daily scenes as sparrows or swallows and beloved childrens' songs offered me food for thought.
