Again in Retrospect

Again in Retrospect/

Flashback

It was after all the strong impact of the melodies flowing all through the movie, "The Music of Strangers" that reminded me of the "Le Unse Les Autre", the movie I had seen long before, I suppose. The word "the Silk Road" should have first of all

brought back the memories of our Silk Road journey from 30 years
past, though.

The profound strains woven by the cello with weighty and stately sound and many Oriental instruments, or the low stable beat of the borelo and the steadfast steps to it seem to have resonated well.

Leafing through our travel album, I now set foot on the Silk Road in my dream, with my mind going over my past images.

Along the Silk Road foreigners were not allowed to walk around freely; Most people wore the national uniform; The roads got very dark in the evening without street lamps.  The experiences there and then  all have come to look dear and precious as time has gone by.

Meiyou!(No)

For instance in crossing that vast land by plane, and bus, we found it such a burden to purchase tickets.

To say nothing of the web or the smartphone, we had to sit in line in the big station square from early morning on and when we finally reached the ticket office, its window was slammed shut with one screach, "Meiyou! (No)".

Not knowing where to go and ask, we were often at our wits' end.  Writing Kanji (Chinese characters)helped us figure out how to obtain the tickets and we could somehow get them from time to time. I was able to enjoy the benefit of belonging to the same kanji circle.

From the city buildings up to the women's fashion, modernization has been conspicuous in China, while the problems are mounting like the air pollution.

Once in our journey we came down with a severe sore throat due to the thick clouds of dust hovering all over the roads.  The red internal medicine prescribed by the local doctor worked wonders as may be expected.

The air has been darkened with the air pollution from chemical and car wastes now instead of just the dust in those days. Such wisdom as creating a miraculous medicine wouldn't be able to cope with the present situation easily.

The epochmaking changes such as the Sky Train(Lhasa Express) connecting Beijing with Tibet may have been indispensable for the country's future but the humane dynamism of the people at the time of our journey can be the very cornerstone of its long national history.
Missing but...

Off the Silk Road into Tibet, where we stayed for a while, we traveled along the China-Nepal  Friendship Road toward Nepal.
There we met two Japanese who lost sight of their companion.

There being no way of communicating digitally then, the two had no choice but to wait for their friend who had all their belongings. He got seperated to pursue his lost passport. The two were endlessly spending time in the almost deserted village, asking
the travelers they came across for any information.

They could find their frined's whereabout at once in this modern
age but the way they accepted to wait in that situation  seems to suggesst what a journey is in its origin.

cheerfully

Now the  music flowing all through the movie  closely resembles the merry dance performance we saw at an inn in Turpan.
In the court of the inn with the sunlights pouring in through the grape vines we, the guests, were relaxed and entertained by the dance performance.

The troupe cheerfully performed their spectacular dance during a break from their work. They indeed made me recognize the music and rhythmic sense of the nation handed down through its history.

Pristine Voice

While web searching I found a Japanese name in the introduction of the cast. One of its ensuing sites showed a video of him playing the shakuhachi(Japanese flute) in a cave.

The cave paintings we saw in Bezeklik Cave(outskirts of Turpan)
had been almost faded and the cave itself had been nearly ruined.

On the other hand, this marvelous cave painting in the video was in Cave 285 in the Cave Temples of Dunhang and looked fully restored.

The incredibly dry, heartrending, blurred as well as sharp tones reverberated in the closed chamber.

It was the collaboration of shakuhachi, cave paintings and its space that made me feel as if I were listening to the pristine voice of the Japanese.

The actual paintings we saw over there were just wretched but one step outside spread the huge desert. It is tragic that the admirable faith drove people across  the desert to dig caves and to draw paintings in each chamber  while they were vandalized by another faith.

I was forced to see this lamentable reality which also holds true in our present age.

Boomerang

A movie flashed my mind back to our journey of 30 years before,
and then I imersed myself in the emotions I had experienced after watching another movie some further years back. Moreover my thought got to as far as the mural paintings from 15centuries ago.

When two wave patterns collide and break, some new waves are triggered around them. This seems to imply that every single incident emerges in corelation.

I once again acknowledged that it is important to squarely face
what occasionally happens and things we initiate doing each time with sincerity.
They will someday come back to us in some form or other...
